Do I need a powerflush?

Your heating usually gives you clues.

You don't need to complete a questionnaire. These are simply the common signs we look for when deciding whether system contamination could be part of the problem.

01

Radiators cold at the bottom

A common sign of deposits settling inside the lower part of a radiator.

02

Black or dirty system water

Dark heating water can indicate corrosion products circulating around the system.

03

Slow or uneven warm-up

Some radiators getting hot while others struggle can point towards poor circulation.

04

Noisy or troublesome heating

Circulation problems and contamination can contribute to noise and recurring system issues.

Worth knowing

Not every cold radiator needs a powerflush.

Cold radiators and poor circulation can be caused by sludge — but they can also be caused by air, balancing, valves, pumps, controls or another heating fault.

That's why we'd rather understand what your heating is doing than automatically recommend a system clean.

If contamination is the problem, we'll clean it. If it isn't, we'd rather point you towards the actual fault.

The aim isn't to sell you a powerflush.
It's to get the heating working properly.

Powerflushing explained

What's actually inside the system?

Over time, corrosion inside a wet central heating system can produce magnetite and other deposits.

That material can settle inside radiators and restrict the movement of water through the heating system.

A powerflush uses specialist equipment, water and cleaning chemicals to loosen and remove contamination rather than simply leaving it circulating through the boiler and radiators.

Once cleaning is complete, the system is refilled, protected with inhibitor, checked and balanced.

What happens

Cleaning the system properly.

It isn't simply a drain and refill. We work through the heating system to remove contamination and get the water circulating properly again.

01

Check the system

We look at the heating, circulation and condition of the system before starting the clean.

02

Connect the equipment

Specialist flushing equipment is connected to circulate water and cleaning chemicals through the heating system.

03

Work through the radiators

The system is worked through methodically to help loosen and remove accumulated deposits.

04

Remove contamination

Dirty water and loosened debris are flushed out rather than left circulating around the system.

05

Protect & balance

Inhibitor is added, the heating is checked and the system is balanced before completion.

8mm & 10mm systems

Got microbore?
That's okay.

Microbore heating systems can still be suitable for powerflushing, but the method needs to suit the smaller pipework.

Heat adapts the flushing process for 8mm and 10mm systems rather than treating them exactly like standard 15mm pipework.

Powerflush FAQs

Before you book.

How much does a powerflush cost?
Heat Leicester's standard powerflush starts at £495 for up to 9 radiators. Use the calculator above to see the estimated price for your system size.
What's included in the price?
The standard Heat Leicester powerflush includes the system clean, cleaning chemicals, protective inhibitor, full system balancing and a boiler health check.
Will a powerflush fix cold radiators?
It can help when sludge or deposits are restricting circulation. Cold radiators can also be caused by air, balancing, valves, pumps or other heating faults, so cleaning isn't automatically the answer to every cold radiator.
Can you powerflush microbore heating?
Many 8mm and 10mm microbore systems can be powerflushed. The flushing method is adapted to account for the smaller pipework and increased resistance.
How long does a powerflush take?
It depends on the size, layout and condition of the heating system. Larger or more heavily contaminated systems naturally require more work than smaller, cleaner systems.
Is inhibitor included?
Yes. Protective inhibitor is included as part of Heat Leicester's standard powerflush service.

You don't need to diagnose the heating system yourself.

Tell us which radiators aren't heating, whether they're cold at the top or bottom and anything else you've noticed.

We'll help work out whether system cleaning is the sensible next step.
